The letter very clearly demonstrates that the Conservancy is prepared to act under its powers against clubs it sees as pursuing this sort of behaviour, and if they do it is something that clubs will be powerless to avoid. At the same time, we have also been contacted by the City Council's Environmental Health Officer who has received a megaphone use noise complaint from before 0630 along Riverside (I think) - no specific crew or club has been identified, but it again highlights that if these authorities become interested in what our clubs are up to, this is likely to accelerate their imposition of punitive restrictions which, again, we will be able to do nothing about. So, can I please re-emphasise the ever-present need for consideration and commone sense to apply in any interactions with other river users, especially in the intense last few days up to bumps? A reminder of the key points: - River closure for non-racing crews from 1630 until 1845. - Row-throughs allowed, but please let me know to expect you. - Combined men/women's hour after racing until 2000. For competing crews: - Please recheck the start orders at http://www.cucbc.org/mays/gor. - Division 1 crews should marshal at Baitsbite, pulled into the bank in order facing upstream (ready to push out and race). - Division 2 crews should marshal at Chesterton. Please try to be roughly in order - with the top of the division (mens crews) nearer to the Railway Bridge. The aim is then that crews row down in race order, spinning in turn near Baitsbite and rowing back up in order towards the start. - Crews that are late will be disqualified. - The course is from the Little Bridge to the finishing post 78 yards downstream of the Railway Bridge. The Little Bridge is marked by a post - please ask the marshals if you are not sure which post this is. - Crews should do a rolling start before the line. Timing starts on the line. - Standard rules apply. For example there will be crews rowing in the opposite direction for crews rowing to the start of division 2, so stick on the correct navigational side. - Also crews need to remember the basics such as lifejackets. I would suggest that captains forward this email to the bank parties so that they know the basic information and can guide any inexperienced crews. I was very impressed by the high quality of rowing that we have here in Cambridge. As the CUBC president elect, I hope to tap into this pool of talent that our incredible college rowing system offers to fuel the 2011 Boat Race campaign. Last year we had several collegiate trialists win the Goldie-Isis race and I expect one of them to make the Blue Boat this year. Please help me to continue this successful progression by encouraging some of your best athletes to train over the summer and to attend the President's Challenge on September 21st in Goldie Boathouse. I hope to see even more athletes there than last year. The numbers are a blessing for us as they provide a larger pool of talent to draw from, but also a curse as we don't have the time or resources to properly evaluate people. Because of this it is crucial that the trialists train to perform on the 5k erg test that will take place the following day on the 22nd, as their strength to weight ratio will form the basis for the first round of selection. Enjoy your celebrations this week, I hope to see as many fit guys as possible at Goldie this fall! The problem is that the system uses a lace knotted at one end underneath the stretcher. The other end has a pressure clip that hooks on to a metal ring at the rear of the shoe. The system involves the lace being clamped into a plastic tube that squeezes the lace when the tube is pushed into the base of the pressure clip. We have had a couple of examples of the lace coming out of the retaining tube during normal rowing . The major concern is the lace squeeze mechanism at the base of the hook these can break when up side down in the water and cause great difficulty in extracting the feet from the shoes. British rowing's safety Adviser , Clive Killick, has put out the following advice for owners of these boats "My advice is that all control commission checks should look very carefully at these boats and if there is any doubt about the heel restraint mechanism, they should require additional laces to be added." There are separate accounts for the men's and women's captains (and overall captain where this is a separate person) of the form collegename.men, collegename.women, etc., with accompanying e-mail addresses collegename.men at cucbc.org and an overall collegename at cucbc.org address for both/all of a club's captains. Outgoing captains need to give the username and password for both their CUCBC website AND CUCBC e-mail accounts to their successors. The website can be accessed at http://www.cucbc.org CUCBC e-mail is available via the webmail interface at http://webmail.cucbc.org It is important that captains have access to their e-mail account as all important announcements from CUCBC as well as notices of competition entries, fines etc. will be sent to this address. If you wish, you may set it up to forward to another e-mail address. To do this, use the Settings link at the top of the webmail interface. Incoming captains should update their committee contact details on the CUCBC website - it is important these are kept up to date in case we need to contact you urgently. To do this, log in to the website then click My Club Information Form on the left. Then click the Edit link. Incoming captains should change the password to both accounts. To change your website account, log in then click My Account on the left. Then click the Edit tab and change the password. To change your e-mail password, log in to webmail and click Settings in the top right. Then go to Accounts and "Google Account Settings" at the bottom (by "Change account settings"). You will then be presented with a Change Password link. If you have any problems or queries, please e-mail me: webmaster at cucbc.org Have a good summer! Dan P.S. CUCBC accounts (e-mail and website) are issued only to club captains, NOT to secretaries, LBCs, etc. Likewise, only captains' @cucbc.org addresses will be subscribed to the captains' list. If you want, you can set this up to forward to another account, but no other addresses will be subscribed to the list. -- Dan Wilkins (Jesus College) CUCBC Internet Secretary dan at cucbc.org :: 07817 657717
