Bung starts are allowed only on Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th June. Firm pressure is allowed for bung starts, BUT ONLY the FIRST THREE TO FIVE STROKES of the start are allowed. The function of bung starts is to practice pushing off and lining up. It is absolutely NOT an opportunity to practice full starts, not least because of the wash it creates for the narrowboats (often causing piles of plates, glasses, anything breakable to fall.) and also the obvious problems of having many crews in a constricted section of river moving at considerable pace. There are no restrictions on the part of the river downstream of Chesterton, and clubs have been known to set up a chain and pole from their start positions. However, CUCBC will not provide these before the bumps start. If you are practicing starts and extended pieces from your station, please be aware of (and avoid) obstructing other crews. I've given clubs consecutive slots in lots of instances - you can obviously send one person to cover both slots if you wish (the overlapping times are simply to ensure we always have marshals in place), or change over at times different to those stated, but you need to inform the Control Desk in advance if you want to do either of these. Marshals do perform important roles, especially on Friday and Saturday when the towpath gets very busy, so please ensure they turn up as requested - they should have at least a basic idea of how bumps work, so please don't send people who don't have a clue about rowing! Please check and update the CUCBC website with your final crews. You will be able to do this yourselves until this Thursday, so I ask you to do this individually to save the committee lots of work. Giving us full crew details helps to resolve queries about eligibility as quickly and easily as possible. 5. Please ensure that you are familiar with the rules regarding crew changes (or rather, lack of them) during Bumps. In particular, the crews that qualify in the Getting-On Race must be the same crews that take place in the Bumps: infringements risk fines and/or disqualifications. If in doubt, email the committee. 6. The Pre-Bumps Captains' Meeting will take place on Sunday at 5.45pm at the Engineering Department (please arrive early). We expect at least one captain from each club to come (and preferably all) - if you really cannot, please send me your apologies and you will need to speak to another captain who is there to check what is said. As we get closer to Bumps, any urgent queries/requests should be sent to committee at cucbc.org so that at least one of us picks it up. From: Martin Haycock, Executive Committee, CUBC *CUBC Constitution* The CUBC Constitution has been redrafted, and a copy is attached ahead of the CUBC Meeting on Sunday 7th June to which you will already have been invited by the CUBC Hon Sec. The CUBC Constitution has not been redrafted for some years, therefore this exercise has been undertaken primarily in order to ensure that the CUBC Constitution reflects the realities of running the club today. Please note the following, which we hope provide an overview for the redrafted wording attached: *1. CUBC is a student club* CUBC is a student club of the University and is student-led though the President. The redrafted Constitution reflects this, but importantly also acknowledges that CUBC is a complex organisation requiring considerable support from both professional staff and from volunteers on its committees. We believe this is the first time the CUBC Constitution has had a major review since the CUCBC was created! The Honorary Secretary is the link between the CUCBC, college rowing and the CUBC. That's why the Hon. Sec. is voted into office by college captains. *2. Membership more clearly defined* The redrafted wording splits membership between Life Members (in essence Old Blues and Goldies) and Ordinary Members (primarily members of the current CUBC squad who do not yet have a Blue or Goldie Colour). *3. ARA requirements satisfied* The wording of the Constitution has been redrafted to reflect current requirements of the ARA (soon to be rebranded as "British Rowing") with regard to equality, child protection and water safety. *4. Executive Committee structure * The updated wording sets out the structure and workings of the Executive Committee, the primary decision making body within the CUBC. *5. AGM introduced* The CUBC wishes to institute Annual General Meetings. The aim here is to provide clearer accountability from the Executive Committee to the membership of the club. We trust you will support these revisions. If you have any questions ahead of the Captains' meeting, please contact Martin Haycock (CUBC Executive Committee member) at martin.haycock at ubs.com or 07979 366165, or Rev. The Penny Ferry, although closed, is being opened specially during Bumps, and the licensee is happy for rowers and bank party members to use the loos in the pub. I have been trying to get agreement for loos on the Common from the Council since last Mays, but they only confirmed this would be ok today. This means that there really is no reason for anyone to have to use the bushes on the common as a toilet, so please tell your crews not to. Fines equivalent to the Police 'on the spot fine' for such an offence (?80) will be charged to clubs for anyone seen doing so. REFRESHMENTS Please tell you supporters that the Penny Ferry will be open with a limited stock of snacks, soft drinks and beer on each afternoon of Bumps, and that the Plough will be providing a full catering service for Bumps supporters throughout the week. Support for both would be much appreciated. LITTER There will be two large bins at Grassy and wheelie bins at the Gun Shed. Please make sure that starting stations are not left littered with plastic bottles after the start of every race. If the crew can't take them home in the boat, makes sure a member of the Bank Party picks them up. Plastic bottles are one of the biggest litter problems evidenced on the Cam. SPINNING I received a report from the Conservators this morning that, since the 'spin here' sign in Baits Bite Reach was stolen a few weeks ago, bad habits have crept back in, I have seen a list detailing thirty or forty crews that have carried on and spun either in front of Mr & Mrs Russell's boat or even closer to the boom at the weir. The spinning point was marked after a crew got stuck on the boom as doing so is really dangerous. A boat capsizing there would undoubtedly result in people being swept under the boom and into the weir. Coxes, please make sure you spin at or just before the wooden boat shed in the Baits Bite reach. This is primarily for your crews' safety. Finally, THE SWAN FAMILY The state of play when I was down at the river around lunch time was that the female and her cygnets and been coralled into the cut between First Post and the Gut (just next to the summer house going upstream). The intention is to close the cut with plastic netting/fencing for the duration of racing each day. We will keep this situation monitored on a division by division basis and ensure that SUs and JUs are aware of what is going on so that they can keep coxes briefed before the start of each division. Any more news on this will be passed to you asap. A couple of reminders: Make sure you boat and marshal on time. The M6/W5 division marshal at the start, 10 minutes before the M6 start (i.e. 1245 on weekdays and 1045 on Saturday). Everyone else marshals at Chesterton, 45 minutes before the start - you should be pulled in to the bank by this time. This is particularly important for women's crews, as boats from the preceding men's division may be racing to Top Finish. When doing practice starts on the way down, please only count down from 10 so as not to hold everyone up! Practice starts may be eliminated if we are running late (but you can still do rolling starts). First Post Reach is not a litter bin (or a toilet)! Take your rubbish with you in the boat (it?s not heavy enough to slow you down) and if you need to relieve yourself, use the toilets at Baitsbite or Stourbridge Common. When you bump, HOLD IT UP! When you get bumped, KEEP ROWING! Do not celebrate before clearing the river ? it is DANGEROUS! Bank parties are strictly limited to 4 cyclists. This includes the boatman and any VIPs. Your "kit carrier" does not need to cycle down with the division - you're not going to get cold in the minute or so it takes for all the other boats to row past you after you've bumped out. Notes from the Umpires: There were a lot of fines today for crews not arriving at Chesterton on time. In one case we had a women's crew still not pulled in at Chesterton when a men's crew racing to Top Finish was coming past Morley's Holt. Particularly if the rain continues and the current gets stronger, it can take longer than you think to get pulled in when most of the bank is already taken up by marshalled crews. I had to stop a division in exactly these circumstances two years ago and would like to avoid that happening again. If you're worried about getting cold or wet, bring extra kit. Please tell your bank parties to be careful when disposing of poles after pushing boats off - remember that umpires and other bank parties will be cycling along the towpath. On a positive note, I haven't heard any complaints about litter being left on the towpath or about people urinating in public. Let's keep it that way. The first is a short trip to the Penny Ferry, leaving her mooring near Jesus Lock at 1200hrs. Should she be on time she will be spinning at the Penny Ferry at c1230hrs to head back upstream to her base. This means that crews heading downstream for M6/W5 need to allow pleny of time to get to the start as she could impede your progress between the boathouses and the Penny Ferry, and M5 need to be aware that you that she will be on the river as you row down to marshal at Chesterton. I note that the list of fines sent out by the Committee last evening did not include a reminder that all fines are open to appeal. Appeals should be directed directly to me at this e-mail address (seniortreasurer at cucbc.org). I will acknowledge all appeals asap, but am unlikely to be able to deal with them until after the weekend. I will notify you immediately if a fine has been cancelled, reduced or upheld, however. Those who e-mailed in response to Chris's message last night need not do so again as I will tke these as appeals. She is due to leave Jesus Lock at 1930hrs, but I will ask the Skipper to delay setting off by five or ten minutes so that M1 is over before she gets to Chesterton. I will obviously keep the Skipper informed during the day of any delays to the races, or re-rows scheduled for after M1. BOW BALLS One of the Chesterton marshals reported yesterday that there were several crews which, in his view, had insecurely fitted bowballs. Whilst I have said that fines should not be issued for this, you need to remember that the bow ball is a very important part of safety equipment and that the only fatality in Bumps (which happened over a century ago) would probaby not have happened had bow balls been in use in those days. Please bear in mind that a bow ball can be loosened after a bump or a crash into the bank and so you should check it before you set out from the boathouse each day, just as you would get the crew to check riggers, nuts, footplates etc. If you have any doubt at all, get your boatman to check it. It is in no one's interest to run the risk of injury to other competitors, or damage to boats as a result of a loose bowball. Remember too that, if the Chief Umpire or one of his deputies rules that the bow ball is not properly fitted, and this cannot be repaired before the start, you will not be allowed to race. Fines will continue to be issued for any boat arriving at Chesterton without a bow ball, of course. The only exception to this that might happen is if most a division are stopped (as in M1 on Weds), and I have the possibility of returning them to the start while only causing maybe 10-20 minutes delay (and we have never yet had to do this on the Saturday) - please can captains make very clear to all their crews that once their own race is over they still have to paddle back safely, remembering subsequent divisions will be coming down. Please make clear that swapping crew orders, coxes with rowers, etc are not encouraged, and if a crew does this and subsequently creates a problem then there will be very significant penalties. Thanks, and best of luck tomorrow! Pete -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please could you forward this to your incoming LBCs so they have plenty of time to get the date in their diaries. All LBCs are expected to attend the course. The session has been extensively revised this year and will cover safety, equipment and coaching. A register will be taken at the course since it is important that everyone who will be coaching lower boats is aware of their responsibilities and liabilities. In addition to LBCs, the course is appropriate for others who will be coaching next year. I remind you that the CUCBC handbook specifies: "That coaches for college crews and for scullers have undergone at least the minimum training, which is attendance at the CUCBC course at the beginning of the Michaelmas term, and later when required (from September 2007), and that they are members of the ARA or otherwise insured." Please could you ensure that the relevant people are made aware of the course since it is of the highest importance that they attend. Thanks. Girton M1 are having a training camp at Henley from Monday 22nd to the Henley Regatta. Unfortunately, due to 1 of our crew members having a job we need a bowsider for the first week of the camp. Accommodation is going to be at crew member's houses, who conveniently live close enough, so there's effectively no cost for the trip. We'll be being coached by Colin Williamson, who rows for Leander 1 and was participating in GB trials until he injured his foot. So we'll be having some very high quality coaching so it should be a good week. We're looking for someone who won't upset the boat. They don't have to be a fantastic standard, a lot of you will have seen us on the river so will have an idea of what we're looking for quality wise.
