From cuwbc at cucbc.org Sun Jan 4 21:22:41 2009 From: cuwbc at cucbc.org (Thomas Walton) Date: Sun, 4 Jan 2009 21:22:41 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Weekend rowing in Lent Term Message-ID: <641beeae0901041322h771ef7ebhe7e6d795deb1a8d2@mail.gmail.com> Dear all, Lent term is always very crowded with events on the river, particularly so this year, and as such river closure arrangements will unfortunately be complicated. The below details are the anticipated restrictions for college crews. Any changes and final confirmation of closure times will be announced by email and on the website. *Date* *Restrictions* Sat 10 Jan No restrictions Sun 11 Jan No restrictions but pre-term training camps may not use the river - please contact Pete or myself if you are unsure. Sat 17 Jan Rowing allowed *all day* (lighting down to lighting up) Sun 18 Jan River closed until approx 3.15 pm (CRA Winter League) Sat 24 Jan River closed until approx 2.00 pm (Head to Head) Sun 25 Jan Rowing allowed after noon Sat 31 Jan River closed until end of Newnham Short Course (possibly all day) Sun 1 Feb Rowing allowed after noon (but closed below A14 bridge until 3pm for fishing match) Sat 7 Feb Rowing allowed after noon Sun 8 Feb Rowing allowed after noon Sat 14 Feb River closed until 5.00 pm (essentially all day) for Pembroke Regatta Sun 15 Feb Rowing allowed after noon Sat 21 Feb Rowing allowed *all day*(lighting down to lighting up) Sun 22 Feb River closed until approx 3.15 pm (CRA Winter League) Sat 28 Feb Lent Bumps Saturday The two Saturdays where rowing is permitted all day mean that additional Early Morning Marshals are required. These have been chosen randomly from all the clubs and are as follows: Sat 17 Jan (07:27) - Jesus, Lucy Cavendish Sat 21 Feb (06:34) - Clare, Girton The CUCBC committee appreciates that the above is a rather messy set of arrangements, but it is necessary to both avoid disrupting events and give college crews a reasonable amount of water time whilst allowing non-college crews appropriate use of the river at weekends. Please do contact me if you have any questions. Regards, Thomas CUCBC Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Importantly, please note that this does not say anything about the total number of boats allowed per morning, and if necessary may well have to be reduced, the proposal is simply dealing with the allocation system. Neither Maggie nor First and Third are going to be present (apologies) due to clashes with our training camp. However, in addition to the documents being sent round now, another boat club will be presenting the proposal. Best wishes for the new year. They are interested in supplying suitably professional and serious university sports teams with discounted products in addition to CUBC. We'd like to invite sports captains to the lounge at the Hawks club on 30th January at 19:00 for SiS to come and talk about how the correct nutrition can enhance performance about the products they can offer. We've had a couple of queries about University Spares rowing in Bumps. Official Spares still count as University Triallists, and are therefore not allowed to compete in the Lent Bumps (under Rule 20) without the permission of both the CUCBC and the University Club President concerned. This permission has traditionally been granted to CUWBC and CULRC spares, and tomorrow's deadline does not apply. I will ensure that all CULRC spares are granted the necessary permission, without you needing to request it; any captain wishing to enter a CUWBC spare into Bumps should request permission on learning of the selection decision (unless informed that permission has already been granted). -- Christopher Kerr St Catharine's College Cambridge CB2 1RL CULRC Hon: Sec: 2008-09 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Josh West and Tom James, old boys who both won medals at the Bejing Olympics are coming to Hawks on Friday 30th January at 7pm to give a brief chat about life since Cambridge. The nutrition talk will happen shortly after. See below for details. CUBC are going to use SiS products for The Boat Race period. They supply most of the premiership football clubs, the top cycling teams and loads of other athletes. They are interested in supplying suitably professional and serious university sports teams with discounted products in addition to CUBC. We'd like to invite sports captains to the lounge at the Hawks club this Friday, 30th January at 19:00 for SiS to come and talk about how the correct nutrition can enhance performance about the products they can offer. In addition SiS would offer 25% discount to any clubs who are interested and who they approve of. There should be plenty of freebies too. URL: From seniortreasurer at cucbc.org Sat Jan 31 14:00:42 2009 From: seniortreasurer at cucbc.org (Ian Thompson) Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2009 14:00:42 +0000 Subject: [CUCBC Captains] Crossing Points - AGAIN! Message-ID: Dear All, Further to Mark's message and powerpoint presentation he sent out last week, it is regretable that we have had received reports of further incidents taking place over the last three days. In each case it would appear that crews have either crossed over too early or too late (thus ending up on the wrong side of the river) or have failed to give way to traffic (including scullers) travelling upstream. You really must ensure that this does not happen, whatever pressure your coach or crew put you under, or however much they tell you to go one because 'there's loads of room'. I appreciate how much pressure there is on everyone in this Term to bring crews on, and how keen we all are to use every bit of clear water we can without being held up, but these rules MUST be observed. They are not CUCBC rules, they are navigational law, enforceable by the Cam Conservtors and, should there be an accident as a result of a crew failing to observe either rule, the crew concerned is likely to be prosecuted by the Conservancy and pursued by insurers. In such a situation, you, the Cox, would be held liable as you are in charge of the boat, whatever those around you might be instructing you to do. So please, for your own safety and that of your crew and other river users, make sure once again that you fully understand the rules as they relate to where to cross over and who us the right of way (crews 'going home' always do) and that you abide by them. You should note that any breach of the rules reported to the Exec and which can be substantiated will almost certainly result in a training ban being imposed on that crew, if not the whole Club, and could also result in the crew being disqualified from Lents. Observing the rules may at times be inconvenient and may mean that you have to stand up to your crew and/or coach but, believe me, it is in your own best interest as the cox, and the best interests of your club, for you to do so.
