The undertaking is designed to prevent incompetent crews taking part in the racing and creating a danger to all other crews. The term "10 outings" refers to the whole crew and the cox, and the outings must have been in the present term. It also refers to the average of individual members experience, but a member cannot be accepted if they have done less than eight. For example, if a member has only done 8 outings in this crew this term, then that could be compensated by someone having done 12, but if he or she has only done 7, then his/her outings do not count at all, and he/she should not be in the crew. Rowing done on any occasion before this term does not count, nor does rowing in another crew. Do not forget the cox. I urge you all to avoid the early-morning period and to remember basic traffic rules: - give way to upstream crews at all times, especially at the crossing points - spin between the posts at Ditton or after the corner before Baitsbite - don't overtake a queue - don't sit obstructing the river for coaching - only overtake if it is safe to do so (and clear ahead) Infringements of these rules may be fined. The river level is now slowly starting to fall and the stream is minimal. However, I still advise that a land training session would be more useful to most crews than an outing in these conditions, given the particular dangers when boating and landing, and generally in the boathouse and Riverside area where many banks are under water and invisible. As an absolute minimum, coxes with less than a full year's experience MUST NOT take crews out today. We will continue to monitor the conditions; if there are incidents due to insufficiently competent crews on the water then the flag may return to red. This may happen if the water level rises again with melting of last night's snow further upstream, or through the EA's use of the sluices at the different locks to control water levels further downstream, or if a current forecast of fog tomorrow morning comes to pass. At present I am hoping the regatta can go ahead as planned, but we will reassess conditions by the end of today, or, if there is any appreciable change overnight, first thing tomorrow. If the decision is made for the event to proceed, then the purpose of this message is to explain how competing crews should proceed should we also use any flags to indicate river conditions. If yellow or red flags are used during a racing event, you need to be aware that they are used to control access to the river for non-racing crews. They do not indicate that the event itself or any part of it has been stopped. This is because events take place under more controlled conditions than on normal days, with more limited numbers of crews at any one time, of more similar standard and doing the same thing, under the control of marshalls. Decisions to stop the event or part of it will be made by Pembroke BC in consultation and agreement with CUCBC, and will be commincated directly to the competing clubs by Pembroke (so keep an eye on e-mail and their website!). This means that non-racing crews will be subject to the same restrictions as normal tomorrow should the yellow flag be used, and no non-racing crews are allowed on the river should a red flag be used. Please also note that current conditions below Bait's Bite, and in particular near the sluice at the lock, continue to mean that it is unsafe for any rowing crews to use this stretch, and I would not assume that conditions will have improved enough to allow crews over the lock tomorrow. Thank you! Julia ********* CARDINALS REGATTA! This year Cardinals fancy dress Regatta takes place on the 9th Thursday of Lent term, the day after lectures end for most people. This is 12th March, 2009. The race course is short - approximately 500m long from the bottom of the Reach to the Pink House. The regatta will be run as a knockout competition with crews racing alongside each other at each stage. It should, however, be kept in mind that Cardinals is not about rowing fast, it is about fun. There will be two classes to enter: fun VIII's and fun VI's. Wherever possible, crews should be half male and half female. Everyone is welcome - colleges, departments, societies or town crews - there are no restrictions. You do not have to have much rowing experience, everyone who has at least noviced is welcome to participate. The winner of the fun VIII's will win the Cardinals' trophy. In addition to prizes for rowing fast, the best prize will go to the best fancy dress and any fully dressed up crew will get a head start in their races! The more insane your costume the better! This race is not about rowing seriously, it is about fun, so any crew turning up in lycra will be at a disadvantage. A very important part of Cardinals' is bribery. If you've done well in other races because of your superb rowing technique and hours of training, it may be time to rethink your strategy. The more marshals you bribe, the more likely you are to get a head start... All in all, Cardinals' is a great chance to dress up, bribe people and row for fun in the same boat as members of the opposite sex! (Though we do recommend equal numbers of male and female bow and stroke-siders otherwise there might be a few problems with straight lines.) This morning as a result of the raised water levels a narrow boat moored on Midsummer Common lifted its mooring pins and was quickly carried off by the fast current. Thankfully it was noticed by some boaters and a group of rowers, who together, and with some difficulty, managed to get a line onto the boat, securing it to the bank about 500 yards downstream from where it was originally moored. Those of us who have lived on the river for a while know that these things happen from time to time and I?m sure the owner, who arrived soon afterwards, will have learned from the experience. I think I am right in saying that the rowers who did most of the leg work in getting the boat back, and who put themselves at risk without hesitation, were members of the CUBC who had just attended the naming by Prince Phillip of their new eight (apologies if I got these details wrong). I would like to thank them for their efforts and wish them the best of luck in this year?s boat race. I?m sure that everyone, on both sides of the river, will agree that the generosity of spirit they showed is what we should all be striving for on the Cam. Ewan nb Troll P.S. On Sunday the 29th March there is an unique opportunity to watch Cambridge take on Oxford on two fronts. As I am sure many of you are aware at 3.40pm that afternoon Cambridge take on Oxford in The Boat Race. As well as this, at 11.30am Cambridge face Oxford in the Varsity Football match. As it did 2 years ago, the game is taking place at Craven Cottage, Fulham. The ground is on the banks of the Thames and overlooks the straight of the first quarter mile of The Boat Race. CUAFC are offering you the opportunity to watch the football match and then the boat race from the terrace at the football ground. The terrace offers an excellent view of this section of the race and big screens will show the rest of the race. Drinks and entertainment will also be provided. Tickets are on sale now and cost ?12 each (includes the football match and exclusive access to the terrace for The Boat Race). Early purchase is essential as there are only a limited number of tickets for this option and you will not be able to buy them on the day. Marshals are essential in assisting the umpires to ensure smooth running of the event. The marshals' rota for Lent Bumps 2009 is now available online: http://www.cucbc.org/lents/marshals Please check the rota carefully for your club's slots and note that a club may be required to provide two marshals for one slot. The number of slots allocated per club is determined by the number of crews entered by that club with credits given for umpires from the club who have signed up. Marshals should not be novices and should have competed in at least one set of Bumps in the past. Clubs will be fined for failure to provide a marshal or for providing a marshal deemed to be incompetent. Marshals should report to the control desk by Peter's Posts at least 10 minutes before their slot, where they must sign in and will be assigned a position and given instructions. If you have any queries or problems regarding this, or the Lents in general, please get in touch. I need the rest by midnight on Wednesday the 18th of Feb. Remember, no form , no race TD I attach a copy of the "ten outing form" to be returned to me, cc Ian Thompson, by the 18th of February. Our standing advice in the event of any incident involving the threat of or actual violence (ie ANY situation in which you feel under threat) is to call 999 immediately, and this is the advice of the police as well. For reporting incidents after the time (which it is still important that you do), then do so either at or by calling Parkside Police Station (and get an incident number, which ensures it is recorded) or through the ecops route. Further to these, the attached message provides a means of contacting directly an officer with greater responsibility for the area in which rowing is affected by these incidents. Please do ensure that all incidents are reported as, without evidence of a problem, it is inevitable that police resources will be devoted elsewhere. The river meanders its way 12 miles from Granchester Meadows to Bottisham lock. Every year Camboaters, 'Anglian Water's RiverCare' alongside Cambridge City Council and the Cam Conservancy organise the Great Cam Clean Up. They invite you to take part in this most excellent opportunity to give this much-loved river a helping hand, by participating in a river clean up. The Great Cam Clean Up is the perfect excuse to get out there and do something for our fine City, as well as expressing your environmental ethic and collective love of rivers and wildlife. This year the 5th Great Cam Clean Up will officially be opened by The Mayor of Cambridge, Councillor Mike Dixon and will take place on Saturday the 25th of April, commencing at 10:00am at The Fort St George, Midsummer Common and winding up with a Barbeque for all volunteers. Last year more than 170 volunteers collected over 400 bags of recyclable and general rubbish from the river and its banks. Hard working grapple teams recovered a whopping 100 bikes from the riverbed and three motorised scooters were retrieved from Stourbridge Common. This event gets bigger and better every year, we look forward to welcoming you all once again but due to demand volunteers are asked to register early to avoid disappointment. You need to remember that: 1) for much of the available length below the lock the river is narrower than it is above the lock, and two crews cannot pass each other in opposing directions 2) in circumstances where two crews meet (or a crew meets any other vessel), the vessel travelling upstream (ie towards Cambridge)?has right of way. The downstream crew should therefore, if necessary, stop, pull in towards the side (nb?towards the 'true' right hand bank), and pull in its oars. This applies whatever the downstream crew is doing in terms of training. 3) although rowing crews will typically row in the centre of the available water along this stretch, remember that standard navigation practice is to 'keep right', so that is the direction you should move in order to get out of the way of an oncoming vessel I'm obviously well aware that eligible crews go over the lock for the opportunity to practice full pressure pieces. If you are sufficiently aware of the rules applying, and the cox and coach are observant and aware of other crews around and respond correctly and quickly, it is perfectly safe to do so. Know where you are starting. The start order is on the website (http://www.cucbc.org/lents) and will be delivered to boathouses in the morning. ? Make sure you boat and marshal on time! Division times are on the website (http://www.cucbc.org/lents/times) o The first division of the day (M4 or W3 on Friday) marshal 10 minutes before, at the start. o W3 and M3 (and W2 on Thursday) marshal on the Meadow Side of the Long Reach, 45 minutes before the start. o All other divisions marshal at Chesterton, 45 minutes before the start. o If you are late marshalling, you may not be allowed to race! o When doing practice starts on the way down, please only count down from 10 so as not to hold everyone up! Practice starts may be eliminated if we are running late (but you can still do rolling starts). ? First Post Reach is not a litter bin (or a toilet)! Take your rubbish with you in the boat (it?s not heavy enough to slow you down) and if you need to relieve yourself, use the toilets at Baitsbite (or do it out of sight of the public!) ? Hold the bung up high on the start so the umpires can see it. ? When you bump, HOLD IT UP! When you get bumped, KEEP ROWING! Do not celebrate before clearing the river ? it is DANGEROUS! ? Listen to and obey the Umpires and Marshals at all times. ? Bank parties are limited to 4 cyclists. This includes the boatman and any VIPs. ? Keep it sporting! Bumps is meant to be fun! Abusive language or behaviour towards the umpires or anyone else will not be tolerated. Also please do not strip the bank of greenery entirely! ? College clubs are required to provide marshals as per the rota (http://www.cucbc.org/lents/marshals) ? please make sure your club provides all their marshals and that they turn up on time. The website contains a lot of information about the Lents (http://www.cucbc.org/lents) including rules and where to watch from. Results and notes & fines from the umpires will be published online and e-mailed around after each day?s racing. Remember that for official purposes, the crew on the first day is your ?crew? ? any changes thereafter are substitutions and permission must be sought from the CUCBC Executive Committee in advance. Please e-mail the entire committee (committee at cucbc.org) with such requests to increase the likelihood someone will pick it up. During racing, any queries can be directed to the Control Desk at Peter?s Posts (who will be able to refer them to the Chief Umpire). If you are looking for somewhere to watch from, the Plough at Fen Ditton (whose garden backs on to the river) will be serving food and drink all day. CUR1350 will also be providing commentary (http://www.cur1350.co.uk/). We will be selling Bumps Programmes for ?2.50 at the Control Desk. Good luck to all crews racing! Poor or missing heel restraints could endanger your crew in the (albeit unlikely) event of a capsize, and their importance was demonstrated in a recent capsize incident below Baitsbite. Checks may be made on boats over the rest of the week and so I suggest crews check their boats to ensure they meet relevant standards before leaving the boathouses. This is something that club safety officers have to sign off as being correct for all your boats in their return to our Safety Adviser at the beginning of each year, and is specified at the appropriate point in our rules. Failure to do so results in a club being barred from having outings at the start of the year until resolved. This is an equivalent safety requirement in terms of ARA regulations as are bowballs and lifejackets, and this was demonstrated only last week in an accident below Bait's Bite. Given that all club 'returns' were completed by safety officers, it is therefore disappointing to say the least that a spot check of a range of crews yesterday afternoon revealed that no less than 80% of crews checked had at least some of the heel restraints in unacceptable condition, with some crews having none. In an ARA event all of these crews could have been barred from racing. Therefore, we will continue with spot checks today. I would advise all clubs to check all their boats in this respect urgently. The Conservancy have had reports of "several girls from LMBC" and several rowers from boats with names like "Blank Prince" and a pink one called "Baron Charles de Gohr" relieving themselves on the common. Please be aware that the River Manager will be in the vicinity this afternoon and has threatened to take action under Conservancy Byelaws against anyone caught with their trousers down, so to speak. Message-ID: <219951.89782.qm@web86402.mail.ird.yahoo.com> Dear all this has come up again. Ian's last message could not be clearer...DO NOT do this. You will see from the last line from the message below that people and clubs who ignore this are likely to find themselves in court. Pete ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: Philippa Noon To: committee at cucbc.org Cc: Mark Stringer Sent: Friday, 27 February, 2009 11:24:40 AM Subject: Urinating in public - again! Hello CUCBC I?ve had two more complaints about this since my last missive. The eyewitness reports read as follows: Received Thursday morning (in respect of Wednesday 25 February): ?Again, yesterday at 4.30pm I saw three chaps relieving themselves on the Common, in full view of passers-by! Not even hiding behind a tree! ? Received Thursday 26 February: ?Today, Thursday 26th, they were still urinating on the Common. 3.30pm Several girls from the LMBC were under the Green Dragon Bridge using it as a toilet. Their boat was by the bridge on the Stourbridge Common side - I couldn't see the boat nos etc. 4.00pm Several from the Black Prince " " Sims " " Baron Charles de Gohr Plus numerous others.? Clearly we need to discuss what can be done in the future to improve welfare arrangements for competitors. I shall be cycling into the City later for a meeting so if I do catch anyone ?in the act?, I may be required to take action under our Byelaws. Please note the earlier division times on Saturday (M4 race at 12:40) and know where you are marshalling! Notes from the Umpires Thank you for another good day?s racing ? a few points to note for tomorrow: ? Paddle home safely ? it is probably not a good idea for the cox to swap with one of the rowers! ? There will be no rerows on Saturday (unless the majority of a division has to be rerowed). ? Take your litter with you in the boat ? don?t leave it on the towpath. ? Use the toilet before boating ? Stourbridge Common and First Post Reach are not public toilets! ? Know where the finishes are ? particularly note where Men?s Top Finish is (post just downstream of Chesterton Footbridge) and try not to crash in to marshalling crews! There is a history of accidents (and injuries) being caused as a result of swapping crews/coxes who have no experience of rowing/coxing or rowing on the opposite side around. Don't do it. College crews may use the river after 12noon on both Saturday and Sunday next weekend, but not before. This is in response to a request from Captains who have crews going to HoRR but whose crew members will still be required to attend lectures in the morning next Saturday. As Thomas has said, arrangements for the Vacation will be announced shortly.
