I would be grateful if you could pass on the following message to your clubs. Many thanks, Harriet -- CUWBC will be running a summer Development Squad from Monday 23th June to Sunday 20th July which is open to all female college rowers and male/female coxes. We are looking for anyone who has had some experience of rowing or coxing and is interested by the possibility of receiving more individualised coaching and competing for the university in the summer regattas. Dev Squad is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy rowing when the weather is at its best, the Cam is least crowded and the stress of exams is over. If you fancy being a part of next year's campaign then the CUWBC summer Dev Squad is the perfect introduction. Even if you're not sure if you can/want to trial next term, dev squad is still a great chance to improve your rowing. Please fill in the online form at www.cuwbc.org asap (deadline 1st June). If you are keen to trial but can't attend dev squad please fill in the form anyway so we have your details. Any questions/queries please don't hesitate to get in touch! This year, we will also be running pre-Dev Squad erg sessions. These are not essential but will give you a great head start once Dev Squad/trialling begins. We will have a different focus for each session and will include some advice on 2k strategy. If you are interested in attending these sessions then please contact me separately (i.e. in addition to the online form). The elections will take place on Monday 19th May, at 7.30 pm at Goldie, and all women's captains are eligible to vote. (Voting by proxy can be done until 2359 on Sunday 18th) In addition, any member of a women's boat club who's in statu pupillare is eligible to stand for the position, so I'd be grateful if you'd pass this information on to your clubs and consider running yourselves. The job involves working on the CUCBC junior committee, being involved in the day to day running of the Cam and in running races such as the Bumps, and also being part of the CUWBC junior committee who administratively support the squad's ambition to beat Oxford in three boat races in March each year. It's great fun and an opportunity to meet new people and be significantly involved in both University and College level sport - and to qualify to wear a minty green splashtop! I can highly recommend the role, but if you want any further information about what's involved do get in touch by emailling cuwbc at cucbc.org or eg288 at cam.ac.uk. If you want to stand, you need to find a women's captain or anyone who's rowed in a Boat Race for CUWBC or been a spare who's still in statu pupillare to propose and second you. Then please email me a manifesto explaining briefly why you'd be good at the job, by the end of Friday 16th. This will then be circulated, and you get the chance to say a small amount about yourself at the meeting before voting begins. Any questions, just shout. It seems there has been an upsurge in trailer parking on the residential roads behind the boathouses. This is not something that Colleges normally do, but any that do should be aware that there are some significant legalities involved, which are indicated in the message. Thanks Pete >>>> I write as an enthusiastic rower who is also a resident of De Freville Avenue. I have to report an escalating sense of exasperation felt by many residents of the De Freville, Aylestone, Kimberley, and Pretoria area at the illegal parking of unhitched unlit boat trailers by members of various clubs affiliated to the CRA. In the worst cases, they leave trailers parked on double yellow lines and very close to road junctions. Many of them have dangerous pieces of metal protruding from the side, ready to impale passing cyclists and pedestrians in the head and eye. I have gone to some lengths to establish the legal position, and it is as follows: *********************************************************** The following website, which shows part of the Highway Code:- http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069860 ... and this is extracted from it......... "250 Cars, goods vehicles not exceeding 1525 kg unladen weight, invalid carriages, motorcycles and pedal cycles may be parked without lights on a road (or lay-by) with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less if they are at least 10 metres (32 feet) away from any junction, close to the kerb and facing in the direction of the traffic flow in a recognised parking place or lay-by Other vehicles and trailers, and all vehicles with projecting loads, MUST NOT be left on a road at night without lights. [Laws RVLR reg 24 & CUR reg 82(7)]" *************************************************** I appreciate that much of what is in the Highway Code is advisory, but the paragraph beginning "Other vehicles and trailers ...." is, I am advised, legally binding, and the precise requirements for meeting the lighting rules are set out in the legislation and should be followed to the letter. A large number of the residents of the area would be most grateful if you could bring the legal position to the attention of your affiliated clubs and their members. We have, in association with the sending of this message, suggested to the local police that they should start to enforce this legislation more vigorously. We hope very much that they will heed our advice. Please would you urge members of clubs affiliated to the CRA to obey the law and, more generally, behave with greater consideration? -- This message (and any attachments) is for the recipient only. I understand that an appointment is shortly to be made, and the attached document and questionaire is a start to the process of planning and allocating the time and activities of the person appointed. The questionaire is a slight modification of one used more generally across the ARA, and therefore some of the questions do not entirely 'fit' with the way college clubs work in Cambridge, but you should still be able to give all the required information. It is important that clubs engage with this process and return these questionaires. In a college context, the post holder is mainly intended to provide a means of 'coaching your coaches' and assisting your planning, training structures etc, as there are plainly too many colleges to enable all of them to have individual crews coached. Once someone is in post, whether your club benefits from it will be very largely a function of how much it is prepared to take up the opportunity positively! One of the sport events is rowing, and we are planning to hold a 500m race on the reach between 14:00 and 14:30. We would like to ask fellow users of the river Cam to give us a short 5 minutes to do this race. Marshalls (Yellow fluorescent jackets) both upstream and downstream will request you to remain stationary for a short period. On behalf of the Oxbridge organisation committee, I would like to thank everybody in advance for their cooperation. Congratulations, you made it. Meetings you need to know about: 5pm CUBC Open meeting (Hon Sec election) Sutcliffe will chair 5.45pm Captains meeting - Pete or Ian will chair Both in the Latimer Room at Clare. E staircase. For the CUBC Hon Sec election, you are entitled to one vote per MENS boat club. Newnham, New Hall and Lucy Cav are not entitled to vote. Medics and Vets I will check, but I don't think you are either. If any of you are current or former CUBC squad members, you probably get two votes. Contact me if this applies to you. There are three candidates at present. Manifestos will be distributed shortly before the meeting and there will be a small time window during which you may register an electronic or proxy vote. If you turn up to vote in person, this overrides an electronic or proxy vote. If you have any items for the agenda in the Captains meeting, please send them to me any time from now. There will be one division and marshalling times and a start order will be posted on the website after I send this. As a consequence, there will be no mens and womens hours on that day. River closure times will also be posted on the website. I'll say that again..... ****No mens and womens hours on Friday 6th***** If you're not usually allowed out during mens and womens hours, I'd ask you to be nice and stick to your usual outing times on that day (ie before 5.30pm, after 8pm), so that the crews normally allowed out during restricted hours can have the hour or so after the race to train. Everything going up on the website shortly. Laura -- CUBC Honorary Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
