Dear all, Although we are less than a fortnight away from the Henley Boat Races - where we hope as many of you as possible will come to watch the CULRC and CUWBC defeat Oxford - it is already time to start thinking about next year's campaign. The CULRC will be running a Summer Development Squad starting on Monday 23 June and ending on Sunday 20 July. During this time we will begin training to beat Oxford in 2009 and will enter races at Kingston and Molesey Regattas. There will be a meeting for all those interested on Monday 19 May, provisionally in Goldie in the evening...time to be decided depending on men's hour rowing. This will be an opportunity for you to meet the coaching team and vice versa, as well as allowing us to give you various bits of information face to face. Depending on numbers, there may be a selection erg later that week. If you are interested, start researching accommodation options at your College now. Most Colleges are happy to keep on students as long as they are given enough notice. If not, we may be able to assist you in making arrangements that will allow you to remain in Cambridge for that time. We will be training early mornings and in the evenings so you will also be able to hold down a part-time job if you wish. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with Dave White (dew27) if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you on Monday 19 May, if not at the Henley Boat Races themselves. Following the same format of the Queen's novice event, the aim of the competition is to recreate the excitement and face painting that most novices seem to embrace in their first term of rowing. With divisions to suit all rowing abilities the competition will be open to all boats/groups of eight people so first boats can compete against those in the same bumps division whilst any potential rugby/joke boats can be shown that they really aren't as good as they think they are. Entry will be no more than ?40 a boat with boat clubs entering multiple boats enjoying significant discounts as will everyone else if the uptake is high. For clarity, the decision to boat rests with the club, WHEN A FLAG PERMITS THEM TO BOAT AT ALL. This applies to green and yellow flag situations (and also red-yellow for the three university clubs). If the flag says that you cannot go out, you cannot go out. If the flag permits you to boat, it is then up to you to judge conditions for yourself. For example the flag may be yellow, but if you believe that conditions are unsuitable for your crew, then it is your responsibility to take the decision not to boat. The flag is a blunt instrument, and we try to err on the side of permissiveness, and only use flags when they are really needed. As a consequence, college crews need to take sensible decisions over the suitability of conditions for a particular crew. The thrust of my email was simply that just because a particular flag situation allows you to boat, does not mean that you should boat without first being satisfied that the crew is capable or coping with the prevailing weather or water conditions. If a flag prohibits you boating, that prohibition is absolute. Again, apologies if there was any confusion. I will say now that I had the utmost confidence in the crew and our preparation, and I think that the loss, while being the one win that our whole year aims for, doesn't speak for our season in general, and I think that if you were to ask the rest of the crew you would get a similar response. If I didn't think that our club were able to win I wouldn't have written to you all, and I wouldn't be planning on getting down to weight for a third time, with the hope of getting into a crew that can break our losing streak. The reason that I write is to convince you to talk to your best lightweight rowers about trialling for CULRC. Firstly I would point out, as we have multiple times recently, that the CULRC is a different club to what it was a few years ago. Secondly, from the athlete perspective, we have a strong, consistent coaching structure and have the use of all the facilities that we need to train effectively as a group; with the result that this year's squad, whose motivation I cannot fault, were able to train effectively and with a strong competitive ethic that drove almost all of us to 6 or more seconds improvement on our 2 kilometre ergometer tests, to name but one measure. We also had the input of a professional dietician, which enabled us to hit weight targets healthily and train effectively whilst losing weight. In short, for an aspiring rower who has the potential to make weight, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain from training with the CULRC. Many of you I know have the dilemma of wanting your best athletes to improve to their full potential, whether with a college club or a university one, and wanting to strengthen your own crews. To this I have no answer, but I would beg of you that you let the rowers themselves make the decision after a discussion with myself or someone else who was intimately involved with our campaign this year. Our first meeting for potential triallists, with a focus on our summer Dev Squad, will be on Monday the 19th of May at 7PM in the Captains' Room, Goldie BH. Rowers of any experience are welcome to come along.
