A reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for the return of Ten Outings forms
and also the last day on which a full refund for crews withdrawn from the
GoR or Bumps will be paid.

You are also reminded that any club not submitting a 10 Outing Form by the
end of tomorrow faces disqualification from the May Bumps.

Dear all

apologies for the mass mailing, but please find attached four documents relating to the detailed instructions that are issued to the various types of umpires that will be running the Mays.

This is being circulated to club captains and coxes lists to ensure all are aware of both the general procedures and, specifically, of the instructions that will be issued in the event of an 'emergency stop' being required during a racing division. Please note that the detail of the instructions has not changed, but that the need to circulate this information widely by this route has been necessitated by the incidents involving barges in the Lents.

The information will be repeated in the various briefings on Sun 8 June, but please ensure that your club members, including coaches, are aware of it. If you identify any issues requiring clarification, then please raise these with the Committee e-mail directly.

This applies to you if you are a mens Captain. Everybody else, including
CUCBC and, should disregard this email.

It's time to elect my replacement as Hon Sec. Each mens Captain has one
vote. Voting is by single transferrable vote, i.e. you need to rank your
preferences, not just vote for one person, unless that's actually what you
intend.

For the first time in forever, the position is contested.

Manifestos are attached.

The election will take place in the Latimer Room in Clare this coming
Sunday, 8th June at 5.45, straight after the pre-bumps Captains meeting.
(Mens Captains also get a vote).

1) Attend the election and vote in person, if you have nominated or seconded
someone, please show up for them (that's at least three of you).
2) Vote by email: Returns by email to me by 23:59 on the night of Saturday
7th June 2008. Showing up in person overrides an email vote submitted in
advance. Please remember to RANK the candidates, 1 to 4.
3) Delegate someone as your proxy to vote (this can be me or anyone else who
you want to exercise your vote for you). If you want to take this option,
again, I need to know by 23:59 on Saturday. Showing up in person overrides a
proxy vote as above.

Please note that the Georgina will be on the course during Mays as follows:

11 June:  16.30 - 17.30 - she is due to arrive at the Penny Ferry c5pm and
will be cleared to come through Chesterton once the 16.45 division is over.
She will spin and go home.  Crews travelling in both directions should be
aware and take *extreme* care, especially before attempting to overtake
her.  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT CREWS FOR THE 17.30 DIVISION (W2) ARE AT
CHESTERTON NO LATER THAN 16.45.

12 June:  12.00 - 14.00 - she is due to reach Baitsbite at 13.00.  She'll be
held on the far side of the river until M6/W5 has gone and will then sping
and head home.  Crews rowing down to the start for the 13.45 division or to
marshal at Chesterton for the 14.30, as well as those rowing home from M6/W5
should  take care and be sure to stay on the correct side of the river at
all times.

     16.30 - 17.30 - as 11 June

13 June:  No trips planned

14 June:   11.00-15.00 - she will be held at either the Penny Ferry or Long
Reach until M6/W5 has finished and will then proceed down and into BB Lock.
She will return to the Lock at 14.00 and will follow the 14.00 division
home.  Again, crews travelling in both directions should be made aware of
this.

     16.00-18.00 - she is due to arrive at the Penny Ferry at 16.30 and will
be held their until the 16.15 division is over.  She will then proceed
behind W1 rowing down to the start and will be held on the far side of the
river until W1 has gone.  She will then follow W1 home, clearing Chesterton
before M1 start guns are fired.

This information will be repeated in the Notes and Fines E-mails, and any
changes to the schedule will be forwarded to you immediately.  For your
information, the Captain of the Georgina will be in direct radio contact
with Pete and me throughout each day's racing.

A report received concerning a member of a crew (yellow boat, new white
blades, cox and coach in University kit) standing up and urinating in the
river downstream of the Railway Bridge c4.45pm on Saturday leads me to
remind everyone of what was said yesterday.  Urinating in public is an
offence which carries an ?80 fixed penalty.  In addition to that, it brings
both College rowing and the University into disrepute.  Pete and I, along
with several other members of the rowing community, are currently engaged in
dialogue with the other river users on the Cam about relationships between
us all, these conversations are not helped by people behaving in such an
offensive manner.

Remember that you/we are very much on show in the next week and we all have
a responsibility to ensure that members of the public have no grounds for
complaint about the behaviour and/or language of members of the University.
Please pass this on to all rowers, supporters and members of bank parties,
reminding them that club's will be fined heavily for foul and abusive
language or behaviour.

A quick warning. It's come to our notice that there have been a couple of incidents of rocks being thrown at crews in the vicinity of the Plough recently.

The police have now been informed, and advise that for the minute coxes ensure that they carry a mobile phone with them during outings.

If any such incident occurs you are advised to report it immediately, by calling '999' if it is immediate or ongoing.

If reporting such an incident after the event, use 0845 456 4564

In either case, be sure to obtain a crime number for the incident.

Anyone who encounters this should report it to Police as per instructions in
Richard Hamersley's e-mail a dy or two ago. I know this is a hassle, but it
is important.  A coin trhown from a height can cause serious injury.

"Coxes must carry their mobiles and call 999 direct themselves if it happens
to them as they pass by. The Police will react and have told me so again
this morning. This is the quickest thing they can do at the time. Telephone
response will be immediate on 999. Coaches should help here too as coxing
and mobile calling is not easy unless you have easied.

They have understood that there are now two locations - The Plough (stones)
and Green Dragon Footbridge (coins) to patrol. They know that we race 12.45
to 8pm and earlier on Saturday.

If coxes cannot do this immediately, they should call 0845 456 456 4 later
and report it and get an incident number. Not so easy, I know, but many
crews pass under these bridges in one day during the Bumps, so it is
important that they call the Police soonest. Do not be afraid to call 999."

After racing, crews should row straight home clear of the course. Once
you have finished racing and pushed off again, there is no need to stop

When rowing home, please keep to the right side of the river as there
may be traffic moving in the opposite direction.

When practising starts, please count down only from 10 seconds - there

NOTES FROM THE CHIEF UMPIRE

1.  Remember that all Divisions start TWO HOURS earlier tomorrow so be on
time.

2.  There are no rerows on the last day of Bumps, unless a whole Division,
or large part of it, is being rerowed.

3.  DO NOT use Foul and Abusive Language.  You are reminded that Bumps can
be disallowed, or cancelled (even after an event is over) , and crews/clubs
disqualified from future competitions in extreme cases.

4.  Please tell all your bank party members and supporters to put their
rubbish in the bins provided or take it home.  Crews should ensure that
water bottles are not left at the start.

5.  When a crew is bumped, they should row on and clear, if it is safe to do

Subject: [CUCBC Captains] IMPORTANT - TODAY'S RACES AND THE GEORGINA

The Georgina will be boating from Jesus Lock at 1100hrs today and then
travelling to and through Baitsbite Lock.  Crews returning home from M6/W5
are likely to encounter her on the section of ther river upstream oif
Chesterton.

In order to avoid delays, it is important that M5 are marshalled at
Chesterton on time for the 11.45 division (ie BY 11am).  We will be holding
the Georgina either at Penny Ferry or on Ditton Meadow until the 11.45 has
gone.  She returns to Baitsbite at 1400hrs and will be travelling home
behind W3.

Georgina will be travelling the course again at 1600hrs and travelling to
Baitsbite.  W1 crews are advised to Marshal as early as possible to ensure
minimum delay to the division.  Georgina will move to BB and hold on the far
side of the BB Reach, before spinning and following W1 home.  Again, crews
for M1 need to be aware that she will possibly be on the course during their
row down to the start.

looking for a second hand VIII. Please get back to me if you've anything you
think fits the bill.
