No college seems to have space on a trailer and having emailed all of the town clubs as well neither do they. I was wondering if those of us who haven't found trailering yet should get together and try and find a trailer and driver for ourselves. So if you fancy giving this a go could you email me back (cej31) and we'll see if we can manage something. Thanks guys, I don't really fancy walking two boats to Bedford! I have been uncertain whether all clubs have been receiving emails through the CUCBC lists successfully, so this email is also addressed to the contact details given on each application form. I apologise for those who have not received previous emails because of this but hope this message will now get through to everyone. Please check through and be sure you are planning to be at Chesterton for your assigned marshalling times. *Racing numbers* should be collected from the LMBC boathouse, and will be available there *from 12.30pm* tomorrow. Please remember to check bow balls, heel restraints and that your cox is wearing a suitable life jacket. These will be checked by marshals with any crew not complying disqualified from the race. The weather forecast for tomorrow is clear and bright, with the fairly brisk wind continuing, so remember your shades! Please make sure you all have sufficient clothing to stay warm whilst marshalling, and be aware of drift due to the wind when manoeuvrings your crews. Please limit bank parties to no more than 5 cyclists per crew, out of courtesy to our fellow towpath users. Any questions please let me know. Message-ID: <2023443e0802101220tb4add88ja0b59842006b2a19@mail.gmail.com> Captains - please forward to your clubs! Hi all, So I've had quite a few replies about umpiring for Lent Bumps in the last few weeks and it's a now very swiftly diminishing two and a half weeks to the first cannon. However, we still need some more of you to volunteer and keep it running seamlessly so please email me now if you can umpire even only one race per day! As long as you've rowed or coxed in at least one set of bumps, then that's the only requirement. If cycling is a problem then we can always find a static position for you. Send me an e-mail with your name and college, availability and say whether or not you've umpired before. I'll take the opportunity again to point out that a large number of the umpires also row/cox themselves and I'll ensure that you have plenty of time to get back to/from your boathouse so your racing isn't affected. Look at it as a warmup cycle! Remember that not only will you get a free meal and drink at the end of it all, you will also reduce the number of marshall slots your college will have to provide. Plus a warm fuzzy feeling inside. The division times are given at: http://www.cucbc.org/node/821 Ideally you'll want to be reporting to the control desk by the Penny Ferry 30 minutes before your divisions start so you can collect equipment from the umpires of the previous division, ask questions, cycle down to the start, ponce around etc, so factor this in when deciding for which divisions you will be available. We'll have a short meeting for all umpires just before the Lents so everyone knows in advance and in detail what they will be doing. While I'm here, the following all said they would umpire but had to check on academic/other commitments. Could these people please confirm their availabilities: Dan Wilkins George Blessley Chris Kerr Matt Castle Jo Jones James Head Ailsa Benton Jo Robinson Hope to hear from lots of you... Why is it there? It's a specific reminder that there will be many crews doing head pieces in this final week and as such, spinning on corners, spinning in misty patches, spinning and impeding oncoming crews etc would be an exceptionally silly and dangerous thing to do and will be clamped down upon, since it is our job to keep this whole shebang running smoothly with minimal incident. Laura Bierer This year Cardinals fancy dress Regatta takes place on the 9th Thursday of Lent term, the day after lectures end for most people. This is the 13th March, 2008 (which happens to be my 21st birthday). The race course is short - approximately 500m long from the bottom of the reach to the Pink House. The regatta will be run as a knockout competition with crews racing alongside each other at each stage. It should however be kept in mind that Cardinals is not about rowing fast, it is about fun. There will be two classes to enter, fun VIII's and fun VI's. Wherever possible, crews should be half male and half female. Everyone is welcome - colleges, departments, societies or town crews - there are no restrictions. You do not have to have much rowing experience, everyone who has at least noviced is welcome to participate. The winner of the fun VIII's will win the Cardinals' trophy. In addition to prizes for rowing fast, the best prize will go to the best fancy dress and any fully dressed up crew will get a head start in their races! The more insane your costume the better! This race is not about rowing seriously, it is about fun, so any crew turning up in lycra will be at disadvantage. A very important part of Cardinals' is bribery. If you've done well in other races because of your superb rowing technique and hours of training, it may be time to rethink your strategy. The more marshals you bribe, the more likely you are to get a head start... All in all, Cardinals' is a great chance to dress up, bribe people and row for fun in the same boat as members of the opposite sex! (Though we do recommend equal numbers of male and female bow and stroke-siders otherwise there might be a few problems with straight lines.) Spectators are more than welcome and you'll be able to get a good view either side of the reach. For further information, please contact Laura Bierer (lcb43), the regatta's organiser. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... First, the perennial noise problem. Official complaint received by the Conservators at 0700hrs this morning about loud cox boxes being used at Chesterton (new TTs boatyard). I am checking the Marshals reports to see who this was but please all remember that noise should be kept to a minimum at this section of the river. I have better things to do with my time than spend it dealing with complaints that this rule has been ignored (again!). Secondly, you are all aware that bung starts can only be practised outside the boathouses on Monday and Tuesday of next week (although there is nothing to stop you taking a bung downstream and practising in the loch between now and then). It is obviously important that crews know what to do to start a bumps race - but this does not mean that you can simply hold up everyone else on the river because you have decided to do a series of them and ignore the build up of traffic behind you, especially on the reach. The same applies to rowing with less than all VIII on Long reach. So, for the rest of this week, could you please make sure that everyone knows that: 1. Between the P & E and the Motorway Bridge you must row continuously, with full crew, unless it is unsafe to do so or if you are doing a standing start. 2. If you are doing a start (or a series of starts), you can only do so if this will not impede other crews. Let people come by if you're working on your start technique, rather than going through the whole thing while an jam develops behind you and people get cross. (And then e-mail me to tell me they're cross!!) In my experience, starts are best done at the Railway Bridge, followed by a good bit of work going down the reach, and at the Motoroway Bridge, doing the same through Long reach, on the way upstream. It is sometimes possible to get a cheeky one in at the Plough, traffic permitting... 3. Spinning at Ditton is NOT advisable this week. Not only do you run the risk of being sliced through if a crew is racing down the Plough and round Ditton, but it also adds to the general congestion on the Reach. Three simple things which, if we all adhere to them, might just help everyone prepare for next week more effectively, keep people calm and sweet, and keep my inbox free of complaints. It is a call for comment on the forthcoming review of the Conservators' mooring policy on the river. The parts of particular interest to us relate to the mooring at Midsummer and at Riverside. I understand that this has been sent to College Bursars, but it might get stuck there. The deadline for responses is 14 March (ie the last day of Term) and it would be good if every club could send in a response - even better if the club, senior treasurer, boatman and college did so. If we are to have influence in changing the current mooring policy, now is the time to do something. If we don't, we will only have ourselves to blame if things stay as they are, or mooring is extended even further than at present. Please read the paper and respond to the Cam Conservators ( river.manager at camconservators.org.uk) by 14 March. My plan is to be at station 10 between 1330 and 1530 on Saturday and again between 1230 and 1430 on Sunday. I've chosen 10 because it leaves crews waiting to start out of the way of the corner and plenty of room for other crews to go by. I'm happy to push out for other crews (or time if someone else needs to practise pushing out) - Just introduce yourselves as you head down towards the lock and we'll fit you in. It's not pretty but it's not terrible either and with a bit of common sense and help the whole afternoon can go off without a hitch. CUCBC will be providing the start/finish marshals, static marshals through the corners in case of carnage, as well as someone to aid marshalling the men on the Reach. However, it would be most useful if you had at least one person bankpartying each of your crews so they can help us pull boats in for marshalling or to help out if a boat crashes and risks impeding the river. Do warn your coxes about spinning in the wind (i.e. get it done quickly and if there's a raging tailwind, then you'll have to spin earlier to account for the drift etc). Good luck! Message-ID: can I plead once more for your cooperation and support. I have received several official complaints today about excessive cox box use a Chesterton, noise at the Plough and noise at Grassy. The result is that one person as contacted the Police and the County Council for advice and has been told that if it persists, they would have grounds to lodge a formal complaint against the University and the Conservators are asking for a meeting to discuss the situation as one complainant who contacted them about issues at Chesterton has video footage to back up his complaint. We are, as you know, discussing how to restrict the number of crews on the river in the early morning. At this rate the discussion will be academic as we could all be safely tucked up in bed having been banned from using the river before 8am. PLEASE take this seriously and be as quiet as church mice above the bridge before 7.30am, and around the Plough and Grassy until at least that time on your earlies over the rest of this term. Cox boxes should only be used to give necessary, minimal instructions and megaphones are best left in the BH. In addition, coaches swearing like troopers is a VERY bad idea - especially if members of the public could be led to think they are being sworn at. And no, this is not all from the lady at Grassy corner. It is a year or so since we've come this close to trouble over the noise issue, but we are close to the wire today and I have no idea what to do about it if CUCBC's clubs will not cooperate... Just a reminder that, if you find you have to sub someone into one of your crews at this stage then, provided he she is a bona fide student, doesn't break the rules re colours, blues and triall caps, you can go ahead. Any substitutions involving you using 'exceptional' (fellows, staff etc. and anyone who might be inelligible because he or she is a colour, blue or trial cap need to be cleared with CUCBC before the first race on Tuesday. Any substitutions you are planning now that will happen during the week need to be requested, with an explanation as to why the sub is necessary and, likewise, if you have issues that develop during the week that result in you needing to sub someone into a crew, you must get permission before putting them in the boat. Someone from CUCBC should be able to check e-mails to committee at cucbc.org up until around 12.15/30 each day (but only until about 9am on Saturday). If you don't get an answer, get someone to check in at control before the race in which you want the sub to row. Lastly, we'll say more about this tomorrow, but the forecast for Tues and Wed is currently that it will be dry - but quite windy. On the assumption that conditions are going to be rowable, please make sure that you have bank parties cycling down with your crews - especially the lower boats. Cross winds gusting across Baits BIte and around Little Bridge can quickly blow a crew that is faffing about across the river - and lower boats arriving for their first set of bumps usually faff a lot! In case of high winds in the Reach, we might have to marshal everyone at Chesterton rather than using the Reach for the second and third divisions to race each day - but we'll keep you up to speed with what is happening via e-mail if changes have to be made. See you tomorrow - and good luck to everyone for the week ahead. Take it home with you or find a bin...it really doesn't look good for the University as a whole and it's not a nice environment in which to row. 3) It should be remembered that the towpath is a public right of way, not a path made by us for our rowing convenience. If someone wants to cycle down the wrong way against the flow of bankparties, then they are at liberty to do so. Admittedly we do advise them not to and to wait for the division, and indeed many of the townsfolk have lived here for many years and will take an alternative route to avoid the issue altogether. Regardless of this, it is absolutely unacceptable to abuse someone verbally (and physically...) for doing something they are perfectly entitled to do. Instead, perhaps you could politely apologise - whether you are right or wrong...just be a big man/woman and smooth it over - then explain the times of the divisions and that it might be best to take an alternative route or time. If they insist on taking it further, then just cycle off and don't get involved any further. Fortunately the wind has died down, the sun is shining (ish) and it will hopefully be a seamless day! Notes and Fines detailed below...if you have a complaint then please email Ian Thompson and myself. NOTES Caius, Downing, Girton and Pembroke W1 crews will be rerowing tomorrow straight after M4. They will row down with M4 and will be marshalling at the Motorway Bridge on the meadow side i.e. well out of the way of the racing line but this may change depending on conditions. Please be aware that they are there and do not hit them. W2 are to marshal on Chesterton at their normal time of 1.55pm, but *not on the Reach* so if these W1 crews go all the way then they have a clear river. As soon as W1 are clear, we will push off W2. Please ensure coxes know a) what finish they are going to and b) where their finish is! The number of coxes I've seen hurtling past their finish despite umpires and bank parties telling them to wind down and not hit the slow crews ahead is astonishing. Conditions were not ideal but everyone coped well. Be warned that the forecast for tomorrow is equally windy - though, at the moment, the prediction is it will be dry, sunny and windy rather than windy, wet and miserable like today. Wind is to be WNW, 21mph gusting to 39mph around 1200hrs, dropping during the afternoon. Possible that W1 and M1 will have the best conditions of the day. We will try very hard to keep cruisers and narrow boats of the course today - sorry for the delay, M3. Finally, please note earlier start time. M4 start is 1240hrs. See you tomorrow.
